Glide Formation in Kinande Does Not Neutralize an Underlying [ATR] Contrast

چکیده

Unlike most other modern Bantu languages, Kinande has faithfully preserved the Proto-Bantu contrast between [-ATR] and [+ATR] high vowels (Hyman, 2002). As a result, while other Bantu languages typically have only two contrastive high vowels (i.e. high back and high front), Kinande has four: [-ATR] [i u] and [+ATR] i u ]. 1 These four high vowels, together with mid [e o] and low [a], are laid out in a vowel chart in (1) below. The fact that they are contrastive is demonstrated in (2): as shown, each of these vowels may appear as the initial vowel of an imperative verb. 2

German glide formation functionally viewed *

Glide formation, a process whereby an underlying high front vowel is realized as a palatal glide, is shown to occur only in unstressed prevocalic position in German, and to be blocked by specific surface restrictions such as *ji and *“j. Traditional descriptions of glide formation (including derivational as well as Optimality theoretic approaches) refer to the syllable in order to capture its c...

Visual Perception of Glides Versus Vowels: The Effect of Dynamic Expectancy

Does the visual perception of glides require a d y n a m i c representation? In our previous experiments on the visual perception of rounding, we argued against the mandatory status of dynamic representations for visual vowels. In this paper, we focus on a specifically temporal contrast between the French vowel [y] and the corresponding [ÿ] glide. Results are twofold. First: for subjects who us...

Huckebein-mediated autoregulation of Glide/Gcm triggers glia specification.

Cell specification in the nervous system requires patterning genes dictating spatio-temporal coordinates as well as fate determinants. In the case of neurons, which are controlled by the family of proneural transcription factors, binding specificity and patterned expression trigger both differentiation and specification. In contrast, a single gene, glide cell deficient/glial cell missing (glide...

New Evidence for a Phonological Stem Domain in Kinande

The verb in Bantu is a highly complex structure, in which long sequences of morphemes are not at all uncommon. However, as has long been recognized, these morphemes do not all belong to a single monolithic domain. Instead, they divide into two main groups: those that lie within the verb stem – i.e. the root, the final vowel, and any intervening extension suffixes – and those that lie outside of...

A Non-Bleeding Rule in Modern Greek*

Sakellariades 1985 (Glotta 63) proposes two synchronic phonological rules for northern Modern Greek dialects, Glide Formation (GF) and High Vowel Deletion (HVD), and suggests GF as "a characteristic case of a bleeding rule". Closer examination, however, shows that S's formulation of HVD is flawed, and that the rule's environment must refer to the need for consonants adjacent to the vowel. Evide...
